The data in these tables are the same as those used in the tables published in the Conviction and Sentencing Bulletin 2010: An overview of Conviction and Sentencing in New Zealand.
Changes in legislation, improved analysis methods, or corrections to earlier data, may mean that the tables are slightly different to those published in previous years. A conviction may be overturned on appeal or a sentence changed, for example, affecting conviction and sentencing statistics. Each year’s release recalculates figures from previous years and may not be comparable with previous releases.
Conviction and sentencing statistics were compiled on the basis of cases through to the 2008 release of the statistics, but from 2009 onwards were released on the basis of counting individuals. The new approach was adopted after extensive consultation with stakeholders as it was considered more consistent, intuitive and easier to understand.
