(ECT) Electronic Card Transactions

Statistics NZ is postponing the release of electronic card transactions data for the month of April, until 11 May 2012. The release was originally scheduled for Wednesday 9 May. The 48-hour delay in publication is due to a delay with data supply. We apologise for the inconvenience.

 3 May

Household Labour Force Survey (HLFS) discontinued series.

With the release of the March 2012 quarter HLFS on 3 May, we are no longer dual-coding the classifications used for industry and occupation.  The following changes apply in Infoshare.

The HLF series using the following old classifications move to the list of discontinued series:

  • ANZSIC96 – Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification 1996
  • NZSC090 – New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations 1990.

The series affected by this change are:

  • (SJB) Persons employed by sex by industry, ANZSIC 1996
  • (SZA) Persons employed by sex by occupation
  • (SYB) Persons unemployed in the labour force by sex by occupation sought, NZSCO 1990

These HLF series using the old classifications were replaced when new classifications (below) were implemented. The new classifications were first used in the September 2009 quarter release.

  • ANZSIC06 – Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification 2006
  • ANZSCO – Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations.

More information can be found in 'Implementing ANZSIC 2006 in the Household Labour Force Survey' and 'Implementing ANZSCO in the Household Labour Force Survey'

3 May Changes to 2011 divorce statistics, to be released on 3 May 2012.
From 2011, divorce statistics will be based on the year the order of dissolution of marriage was granted. All data published for 2011 will refer to orders granted in New Zealand in 2011. Data before 2011 is based on the date that information about the order was received by Statistics New Zealand. For example, 2010 data may include an order granted before 2010. Hence, data from 2011 may not be directly comparable with data before 2011.
This change has resulted from a change in the way the data is collected by Statistics NZ. Data is now delivered electronically to Statistics NZ from the Ministry of Justice rather than being delivered from individual family courts. This has increased efficiency and reduced costs for both Statistics NZ and the Ministry of Justice.

 April 2012
27 April  (SNDQ) Gross domestic product – new industry classification

A new industry classification – the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification 2006 (ANZSIC06) – is being implemented into quarterly gross domestic product (GDP). This new industry classification replaces ANZSIC96. The first release of quarterly GDP on the new ANZSIC06 basis will be on Friday 27 April at 10:45am.

The 27 April release of GDP will include revised GDP data, on the new industry basis, from June 1987 to December 2011. It will also include updated benchmarks for both GDP and the expenditure measure of GDP (GDE). The first release of GDP for the March 2012 quarter will be on 21 June 2012.

Implementing ANZSIC 2006 in national accounts and productivity statistics, published 25 October 2011, explains the main differences between the ANZSIC96 and ANZSIC06. More information about the changes to the industry classification are on the ANZSIC06 page on our website.

See GDP-series-reference-concordance27Apr2012 in Excel for details of the new series identifiers. See GDP-ANZSIC06-tables27Apr2012 to see how the new GDP tables will look. The improved structure makes it easier to find series and the updated GDP tables present the data in a more logical way. Concordances between the old and new GDP series are also included.
 27 April

Update: The release of quarterly gross domestic product (GDP) under an updated industry classification has been postponed. As a result the update of annual national accounts series mentioned below has also been postponed.

(SND) Annual national accounts

The annual national accounts series will be updated on 27 April, with improved estimates for change in inventories. This update comes at the same time as the first release of quarterly gross domestic product (GDP) under an updated industry classification (ANZSIC06).

The current published estimates of change in inventories were produced using interim data and systems. The updated estimates will have revisions to national change in inventories (and other related variables, such as GDP) from 2007 onwards. Change in inventories by industry will also be revised, from 1987 onwards, which will create revisions to value added by industry.

These revisions only have a small impact on the Institutional Sector Accounts. As a result, these Infoshare series will not be updated until the next publication later in 2012.

(RTI) Christchurch Retail Trade Indicator

The Christchurch retail trade indicator is a new experimental series. It is released by Statistics NZ to provide information on the state of the Christchurch retail trade industry after the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury earthquakes. Because the statistics reflect new methods that may be modified, they are released on a provisional basis.

This new activity measure includes sales of retail goods and services, together with some other income such as sales of capital items and businesses, and insurance pay-outs resulting from the earthquakes.

Further information on the series will be available in the Christchurch Retail Trade Indicator: December 2011 quarter information release after 10.45am, Thursday 29 March 2012.

The following series are available on Infoshare:

27 February (TEX, TRX, TIM, EXP, IMP) The release of the January 2012 trade statistics implements the latest five-yearly major review of the Harmonised System (HS2012). HS2012 replaces the 2007 version (HS2007). We will use HS2012 within overseas merchandise trade statistics until the next five-yearly review in 2017. Minor amendments may still occur on a quarterly basis.

The classification change means data users need to take care when analysing time series data, although changes from this review are not as significant as when HS2007 was introduced. To help users, we are providing a supplementary table with the Overseas Merchandise Trade: January 2012 information release on our website. This table uses the HS2012 classification to estimate January 2011, for comparison. Some assumptions had to be made to do this, so the results are not perfect, but the process almost removes the effect of the classification change from the data.

Although the classification change potentially affects the published seasonally adjusted and trend series, our investigations so far show a negligible effect. We will communicate any effects we find when conducting our normal seasonal adjustment or trend series review processes.

Implementing HS2012 will also affect the overseas trade indexes (OTI). However, due to the way the OTI is calculated, the full effect of the change will not be implemented until the September 2013 quarter.

For more information on how HS2012 has affected overseas merchandise trade data, see: Harmonised System 2012 and trade statistics

For information about the HS2012 classification, see: Harmonised System 2012
